Background: Hi, my name is April, I am 21 years old and study Fashion Buying and Merchandising at the University of Manchester.  I grew up in, well, the middle of nowhere. In a village in the south of England near Brighton, but it’s beautiful. The social scene is a little different to my new life in Manchester, dog walks, pub lunches, bottles of wine and board games pretty much sum up my social life at home. Although I am a country bumpkin at heart I thrive in the city, I love how fast paced it is a full of people from differing walks of life. I grew up with my mum and sister and have had a wonderful upbringing, I have always been encouraged to explore all opportunities and to “find my bliss” (my mum’s personal moto) – and my bliss is fashion.

Hobbies:I have had a lot of hobbies over the years, the most consistent being shopping, but I’m not sure that classes as a hobby. I have never been the sportiest (if you ever see me running I am probably running for a bus…treasure that moment. It’s rare) however I do enjoy skiing when I get the opportunity, and dance has always been in my life since the age of 4.. I have other little hobbies but I love to travel and do at any opportunity I get – I took a year out between school and university and I worked full time for 6 months and then travelled North America for 3 months amongst other adventures. I am such a social person, so much so that I have been nick named “can’t be left alone for 5 minutes” but friendships are the most important thing in the world to me and invest a lot of time into them.

Cuisine: I love food! Don’t make me pick a favourite.

Film: Being asked to pick a favourite film is one of the hardest tasks, but after countless tedious small talk conversations in Freshers, I managed to whittle it down to 4… but I’m still just not sure. “Pretty in Pink”, “The Shawshank Redemption”, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” and “Amelie”.

Fashion: It is impossible to pin point one thing about fashion that inspires me to want to be a part of its world. The ever changing, unpredictable and unique nature of the industry keeps you on your toes and gets me excited to see what is around the corner. I have always loved shopping and flicking through magazines since I was younger but my main inspiration is street style and vintage clothing. I am fascinated by how individuals can be given the same item or trend and every single one of them will interpret it differently, I believe that fashion is the best form of self-expression.  I have always shopped at vintage and charity shops as I love how fashion is cyclical and that items can be so iconic or classic that they will keep coming back time and time again (and it’s a little kinder on the student budget!) My style is very relaxed and casual, a lot of the time I do look like I have just rolled out of bed (which is exactly the case 90% of the time) but I really like the vintage girly look, with long floral skirts and shirts. I would say my main era for inspiration is the 90’s, highwaisted levi’s and a t-shirt I wore when I was 7 is my go-to look. My favourite shops include, Urban Outfitters, Asos, American Apparel, Asos Marketplace, any vintage shop- Blue Rinse and Cow are fantastic in Manchester.

My 3 Fashion Rules:

  1. “ Three colours only”  This isn’t a rule just something I personally tend to do, I avoid wearing more than three colours as I find it a bit chaotic for me and it isn’t something I can pull off. Hats off to those who do rock it though, because you can have a lot of fun with it.
  2. “ The baggier the better” If you are someone who always buys mens XXL t-shirts or steals your Dads old shirts, I am the girl for you. It’s nice to wear something that shows off what you have got but I am all about comfort, and the androgynous style is effortlessly sexy.
  3. Don’t over accessoriseI am a big fan of hats and headscarves but I am also a firm believer in “don’t over do it”. For me when it comes to accessories less is definitely more…except for rings…I wear 13 every single day.

Stay Happy,

Love April
